Looking for Buried Treasures
From the time we’re little children we hear and dream about buried treasures whether it be that elusive pot of gold at the end of a rainbow or the buried treasure chest containing diamonds, gold, and rubies deep in the sand on the beach. It goes without saying that it is exciting to dream of discovering buried treasure that has been lost for centuries. As a child you were limited with what you could do to find these treasures but as an adult a whole world of possibilities has been opened up to you. One of these is the art of metal detecting and we see it going on quite a bit on the beaches.
When you’re staying in a Myrtle Beach condo you’ve only to go out your front door to find the beach and begin metal detecting. Hearing the sound of the waves against the shore or seeing the seagulls flying overhead adds to the enjoyment of a day spent outdoors. It doesn't matter what time of year you go metal detecting, you hold onto that dream that you will find something valuable and the chances are very good that you will.
Successful metal detecting in or near water is a science and your success depends on winds, tides and currents that keep the sand moving continuously. Most people don't notice these changes, but a good treasure hunter needs to be patient and observant. Pay attention to markers or landmarks. Trees and rocks make great landmarks for determining sand movement. Take a break midway through the day and return to your Myrtle Beach condo for lunch and a break. Maybe go play some golf or visit downtown Myrtle Beach. Later in the day, return to the beach for another go at it.
The biggest cause of movement of sand on the beach is the weather associated with the changing of the seasons. Large storms will have a big impact on the sand. Pay attention to the wind and wave direction. Once you start to understand how the sand is moving and being redistributed, your chance of finding treasure is increased dramatically.
Storms like Hurricane Irene, can erode the beach and move a significant amount of sand. Watch for channels in the sand or cuts resembling small cliffs in the beach. The more sand that has been moved into these cuts, the more treasure you will find.
Summer is a great time to go metal detecting at the beach. With increasing numbers of people visiting the beaches for swimming or surfing, the number of finds you have also increases. Go out with your metal detector either early in the morning or later in the evening after everyone begins to go home.
So when you’re making your vacation plans and choosing your Myrtle Beach condo, be sure to bring along your metal detection equipment because your chances of finding buried treasure here are good.
